Ghana Signs MoU with Chinese Firm for Volta Corridor Development

The 24H+ Economy Secretariat under the Office of the President has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Hunan Architectural Design Institute Group to support industrial planning and infrastructure development for the Volta Economic Corridor. The agreement, signed in Accra, marks a major step in advancing Ghana’s 24-hour economy agenda into concrete, investment-ready projects. Leading the Chinese delegation, Chairman He Liu expressed confidence in the partnership, stating that the collaboration is built on trust and a shared vision for development. Presidential Adviser Augustus Goosie Tanoh noted that discussions leading to the agreement began earlier this year in Changsha, China, and emphasised the importance of proper planning in driving economic transformation. The Volta Economic Corridor, a flagship project under the programme, is designed to transform Ghana’s production and trade systems. It will stretch from Tema through Akosombo and the Afram Plains to Tamale, integrating agriculture, industry, and transport infrastructure. The initiative is expected to convert over two million hectares of land into agro-industrial zones, supported by renewable energy and modern transport systems. It is also projected to create more than 500,000 direct jobs. Under the MoU, the Chinese firm will assist with master planning, infrastructure design, and financing models to attract private investment. The partnership will also include technical training and knowledge exchange for Ghanaian professionals. Both sides will begin with pilot projects, including two industrial parks and three agroecological parks, before expanding across the entire corridor.
