Galamsey suspect, 23, found dead in Dormaa East

A 23-year-old man, Kwabena Agyei, believed to be involved in illegal mining, has been found dead at Akontanim in the Dormaa East District. Police say the incident occurred on Monday, April 13, 2026, after a report was made by the Akontanim Area Council Chairman, Bismark Ofori, who discovered the body on the outskirts of the town. Officers who visited the scene found the deceased lying in a supine position at the Akontanim chief’s palace, covered with a white bedsheet. He was dressed in black shorts, with muddy clay on his face and visible signs of assault on his chest and back. Preliminary investigations indicate that the deceased and others were engaged in illegal mining activities when they were confronted by a taskforce from the Dormaa Traditional Area, leading to his death. The incident sparked unrest later that evening, as a group of about 70 suspected illegal miners blocked the Kyeremasu section of the Dormaa Ahenkro–Berekum highway by burning car tyres and obstructing traffic. During the disturbance, the group attacked two police vehicles, causing damage and disrupting movement. A joint police and military team later restored calm and cleared the road. Tensions escalated the following morning when about 400 individuals again blocked the Berekum–Dormaa road using similar methods. Security personnel were deployed and successfully dispersed the crowd. Police say investigations into the suspected murder are ongoing, with efforts underway to identify and arrest those responsible. The body has been deposited at the Dormaa Ahenkro Presbyterian Hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy. The Police Command has urged the public to remain calm and avoid acts of violence, assuring that perpetrators will be brought to justice.
