GRA Cracks Down: Four Accra, Tema Businesses Sealed for Tax Evasion

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has shut down four companies in Accra and Tema for failing to meet tax obligations, part of an intensified nationwide drive to enforce compliance. The affected businesses include Soul Restaurant and Janel Spaces in East Legon, Rision Industry Limited at Spintex, and Chang Shang, a hardware dealer in Tema. According to Mr. Joseph Adjeikwei Annan, Assistant Commissioner in charge of Accra Area Enforcement at GRA, the closures were due to infractions ranging from issuing unauthorised invoices and under-declaring taxes to operating without proper VAT registration. Soul Restaurant, for instance, was generating computerised invoices without authorisation and filing returns without remitting taxes, while Janel Spaces issued VAT invoices despite not being registered for VAT. Rision Industry Limited was cited for selective invoicing and under-declaration, and Chang Shang failed to issue VAT invoices while operating from a residential property unknown to the Authority—a setup that facilitated tax evasion. Mr. Annan warned that businesses would remain closed until full records were submitted, and tampering with GRA seals could lead to arrests and prosecution. He also urged landlords and the public to ensure compliance, stressing that tax adherence is a shared civic duty critical for national development. The crackdown signals that GRA will continue rigorous enforcement across the Accra area and beyond, sending a clear message: tax obligations must be met.
